From Jim Johnson
Hi Myles,
Once again everyone could see what only AW couldn’t.
Sky’s coverage was interesting for two reasons.
Firstly, Souness and Henry’s points about width.
Souey mentioned how Sanchez and Welbeck were so tight the full backs were practically holding hands with the centre backs – a dream for a defender. Titi went on to say how when he arrived at Barca he was used to being allowed to drift inside as and when. But Pep said, “You stay outside. And if you don’t stay outside, you’ll sit with me on the bench.”
Insult was added to injury by the ill-timed programming of the ‘Invincibles’ documentary.
What jumped out at me was the Battle of Old Trafford and the sheer determination to fight for each other and not give in from the players in that squad.
Can you imagine Ozil or Giroud stepping in to intimidate the vile Van Nistelrooy as Lauren and Keown did that day?
Reflecting on past glories only serves to demonstrate how far we’ve fallen.
I’d also forgotten how much I missed Mad Jens. Never replaced him and let him go far too early in my opinion.
Every one of that team was a General. Or a Sergeant Major. Or both.
It still rankles with me how we managed to let Cole go for Gallas. Gallas! And then we chose Gallas over Toure!
Both found they had titles left in them elsewhere.
There is an absence of beasts in this squad and until that is addressed, AFC won’t win a raffle.
Peace and love.
Myles says:
The Invincibles is on my SkyHD box at the moment.
Don’t know when I’ll feel like watching it.
There’s too much football, far too much.
As you’ve probably noticed, I’m burned out.
But I miss Jens Lehmann too.
Liked him and rated him and made sure I said why in The Professor.
Three girls from ZDF came one day to film me talking about Jens for German television. They phoned because they’d been reading ANR.
Found the video last year when looking for something else.
