A World Cup is only 7 matches, Myles!

From Ben :

You’ve been on record several times downplaying Arsenal’s most recent FA Cup wins, citing that the FA Cup is only played over 6 matches.

So I’m wondering what your thoughts are about the World Cup, as that’s only played over 7 matches for the eventual winner, as well.

This is the first World Cup that I’m not excited about. I hope that changes as the competition gets underway, but I’m personally counting down to the Premier League starting again in August. It doesn’t help that England have been beyond uninspiring since the end of the ‘Golden Generation’ which spanned England squads from 1996 to 2006.

In fact, the first World Cup I followed was France ’98 which was great for an England fan – and whilst we lost against Argentina, that was a cracking match which had literally everything!

England have a favorable route into the Quarter-Finals, though, with an easy group (although we said that in the 2014 World Cup, as well!), and then we would meet one of Poland, Senegal, Colombia, or Japan in the Last 16.

Anything but Quarter-Finalists would be an abject failure for England this time out. Chance of an England vs. Brazil 2002 re-match looks on the cards, as well!

Things look tasty as we reach the Quarter Finals with England, Brazil, Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, and Argentina most likely all leading the way. Germany are my pick for the overall winners, though.

Penny for your thoughts, Myles!

Hope all is well.

Football is very unpredictable, Ben.

You should know that by now.

Today your favourite blogger can only tell you two things :

1. England don’t play Sutton in the World Cup.

2. England will not play the feeblest Aston Villa team I’ve ever seen.

This should be Gareth Southgate’s England starting X1
