Arsenal need a midfield/Keown on Gomez/Chelsea look solid

This was like watching a Championship game.

Rough underdogs take on the once-mighty Arsenal.

Everyone, including Neil Warnock, knows that Arsenal are in a period of transition from now until 2020.

Yes, Arsenal have some good players but they don’t have a team.

Therefore Emery’s job is a three-year turnaround.

The winning goal was a beauty.

A nice pass slid down the side of the box and Lacazette turned neatly and smashed a rising shot just inside the post.

Alexandre Lacazette is a sharpshooter-type who finds space very well.

If he stays fit, and gets  service, he could score 20 goals .

His biggest problem is that he’s playing in a team with no midfield.

Very refreshing to see Auba scoring from outside the box. Wenger’s laptop said that didn’t work and the whole team screamed at Oxy for doing it in training games.

Then Oxlade went to Liverpool and demonstrated that it does.

I just hope that Aubameyang is hungry for more success at the age of 29.

Saturday’s football was more interesting.

On Match Of The Day , Martin Keown was hugely impressed by Liverpool centreback Joe Gomez.

Keown called him an “an immense talent. He has everything. The way he floats across the pitch. In a four, in a three, it doesn’t matter.”

As a defender, Keown was a serious warrior and I was upset when he left Arsenal. When he first came into the defence, Keown played 19 consecutive blinders. And I’d had never seen anybody do that before. That’s one of my most vivid football memories from the Eighties.

Chelsea beat Bournemouth 2-1 and had a bit of luck.

In 72, Pedro changed feet and hit a perfect shot inside the far post. I was surprised by how accurate his finish was. Then I saw the replay. His shot hit a defender on the back and took a big deflection low into the net.

Marcos Alonso is still roaming forward a lot, even as a left back in a four. He supplied The assist for Chelsea ‘s second  goal in 85. From a narrow angle, Hazard took his shot early and hit it so low that the keeper had no chance.

Good effort by Bournemouth, an outfit I respect. The next 16 teams they play will not be as talented as Hazard and company

Seeing the Champions League Draw last week without Chelsea was rather strange.  Why? Because I’d forgotten that they didn’t finish in the top four.

Very impressed by new boss Sarri so far.

Four wins out of four is a fine start, so I’ve put a Chelsea note in my new diary, a gift from daughter Caroline.

It’s an Academic Diary 2018-19 and the final page is January 5th 2020.  September 3 in 2019 is a Thursday and that is where I’ve written : CHELSEA will be back in the Champions League.

Newcastle handed Citeh an early gift at the Etihad when skipper Jamaal Lascelles passed to Mendy who passed Sterling who scored on his 100th Premier League appearance for City.

Then a nice ball from Kenedy found Rondon on the left and his low cross reached Yedlin in a position to make it 1-1 in 30 and that was still the score at half-time.

But in 52, Kyle Walker fired a missile from 25 yards that found the far corner of the net. Missing De Bruyne’s many ideas and his fluency, City did not score again.

Having guided Newcastle to 10th last season. Rafa Benitez now says “In our four games, we could draw or we could win.”

Clearly, Rafa deserves a better owner.

He has that in common with Unai Emery.
