Brazil/Gabriel Jesus/Tite /Modric & Rakitic/Aguero & Messi not partners

Brazil to beat Switzerland tonight?

Hope so! Tite is a great guy who can control his players. They love him.

Clearly, Tite, or someone like him, was badly needed. He should have had the job four years ago. Big Phil Scolari was way past his sell-by date in 2014 and replacing him with Dunga was pure insanity. The current team has played good football since Tite took over and they’ll will continue to play good football from 7pm tonight.

You’re a big fan of Gabriel Jesus.

His anticipation is paranormal. You might not notice the timing of Jesus’s movement in real time but then you see the replay. Willian is a versatile attacker who can do a bit of everything and win games for you. I hope Willian starts tonight.

Is this Brazil squad too old?

It’s experienced and has two exceptional young goalkeepers. But Dani Alves (35) is past it. Centreback Thiago Silva and Fernandinho are both 33.  I hope Brazil will be good in the first game, very good in their second, and thrilling in their quarter-final.

Disappointed by your beloved Croatia on Saturday?

It was a first game. Everybody’s opener is tight and careful. They beat Nigeria 2-0. Kramaric, the Hoffenheim striker, looks fast and useful on the left. Modric and Rakitic would walk into any team, including Brazil’s.

Nigeria?

Roy Keane was really scathing on ITV. Dismissive. He said, “They need to liven up.”

Will you preview the Tunisia-England game?

Deep down, I want to see England before I say anything. Will we be relevant in this World Cup? I hope so.

Enjoy Argentina 1 Iceland 1?

Very much. It’s fun to see Iceland dictating the zones.

It’s a shame that Messi and Aguero can’t or won’t play together.

Aguero, a pure predator, likes to stay in the middle. When a Rojo shot rebounded to him, he smashed it high into the net in 19 minutes. Only a special player can score that goal from that rebound.

Then Iceland replied within 4 minutes. What moment for Alfred Finnbogasan of Augsburg. He’s the youngest-looking 29-year old I’ve ever seen. Keeper Hannes Halldorsson, who plays in Denmark, saved a Messi penalty.

No country with only 340,00 people has ever qualified for a World Cup until now. That in itself is a miracle. Iceland operate by being ultra-pragmatic, by deploying their assets intelligently.

That fixture had been in my diary ever since it was mentioned at a party by Iceland’s ambassador to the UK :
