Juventus completely outplayed by Ajax and lucky to lose 3-2 on aggregate

Lionel Messi is not the story today.

Messi scored the first two as Barcelona walloped Man United 3-0 and most English papers have devoted four pages to it.

Manchester United losing is NOT the story.

The brilliant young Ajax team provided the most exciting story of this season’s Champions League when they stuffed Real Madrid 4-1 in the Bernabeu.

Last night Ajax went to Turin and beat Juventus 2-1.

Juve’s old men could not really compete with their fresh and stylish opponents in open play but the first goal arrived after 26 when the 34-year old Ronaldo sprinted across the penalty area towards an inswinging corner by midfielder Pjanic and headed home.

Juventus 1 Ajax 0

When Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech  had a shot, Donny van de Beek killed the ball sweetly and slotted for 1-1.

The winner came in 67 and was similar to the Ronaldo goal  in that it was scored from a corner at the same end. But more of an old-fashioned centre half’s header.

Captain Matthijs De Ligt, who is 19, timed his jump perfectly and the ball bounced down into the net.

These Ajax boys have enjoyed the best two nights of their lives by beating Real Madrid 4-1 and Juventus 2-1.

Last night’s thoroughly deserved victory proves they are once again one of Europe’s finest teams.

They completely outplayed Juventus in the second half as they continued pressing fiercely from the front and passing incisively and should have won have won by much more than a 3-2 aggregate.
