Kante return releases Fabregas to beat Mourinho

Chelsea v Manchester United topped the bill on Super Sunday.

A fiercely contested battle!

Seeing that David Luiz wasn’t playing and wasn’t injured, I was so annoyed that I backed Man United to win

I thought they would nick it.

But who cares about that? I’d just won 4 bets on the Man City-Arsenal game. First time I’d ever won so many bets on one match. Three out of four on Spurs beating Real Madrid had been my best this season.

The Roma game was the worst of Chelsea and Antonio Conte was furious during and after their Matchday 4 defeat by 3-0 in Rome.

But this was more like it: a very tight contest won by a spectacular header.

Early on a Fabregas pass down the right released Zappacosta and his cross beat Morata’s foot and also beat Herrera and broke to big Bakayoko. But Baka shinned it just past the far angle.

I should have realised that Kante coming back would allow Fabregas to roam forward and link with Hazard and make Chelsea much more creative & threatening.

N’Golo Kante won the league for Leicester, then won it for Chelsea a year later. What an inspirational dynamo he is!

Phil Jones had an early own-goal disallowed for a foul on him by Morata

In 16, when Lukaku banged in a good shot, Courtois made a good save and Gary Neville said, “He’s up for it, Lukaku.”

After 25, the game has turned into a proper Big Four battle, very energetic and intense, with forwards hunting down the defenders who had been marking them, and giving them a taste of their own medicine.
I was shouting, “C’mon, Chelsea! You’ve gotta score first to win this game!”

Strange behaviour by a blogger who’d expected a dull game and a late United goal in Fergie-time?

After 35, Chelsea had enjoyed 65% possession.

It was 0-0 at half-time.

The only goal of the game came from the Azpilicueta-Morata move I’d first noted when we went to Wembley in August.

There is no way to defend that diagonal ball into the box and Morata’s beautifully-timed header was so well placed that David De Gea didn’t even move. He’s also Spanish and knows how good Morata’s headers can be.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0 in 53 minutes.

Eric Bailly, a super-agile gladiator, and Matic, a formidable technician and interceptor, were United’s best players.

After Danny Drinkwater had replaced Fabregas in 79, Gary Neville said, “Chelsea have played all the football.”

Courtois made a late save from Fellaini to seal the points

VERDICT : Both teams are far better than Arsenal and this was a proper Super Sunday contest that lived up to the hype. I really enjoyed it.
