Manchester City 1 Leicester 0
I was hoping Leicester would give the champions a good game and they did.
The new Leicester of Brendan Rodgers offer highly organised teamwork and a fierce appetite.Their shape was disciplined, their tackling tenacious.
It was surreal to see playmaker David Silva respond to Leicester’s aggression by flying into wild tackle after wild tackle. I kept thinking: one more of those and Mike Dean is gonna send you off !
City struggled to penetrate in the first 30 and then Kasper Schmeichel clawed out an Aguero header that wasn’t over the line. There was no bleep on the ref’s watch.
David Silva blasted a shot that bounced twice and went wide. By then I was thinking: If Leicester can navigate the next eleven minutes, I don’t think they’ll lose.
At half time Sky pundit Jamie Carragher declared that “Maddison has been outstanding in this first half.”
David Silva was booked by Mike Dean for a very high boot on Marc Albrighton in 46. He hadn’t calmed down very much.
Although City’s patterns look too predictable, the game turns into a possession massacre for 15 minutes and Sane replaces Bernardo Silva in 56 as Pep goes to 4-2-4 with Raheem and Aguero up top and they pin Leicester back until Harry Maguire produces a Roy of the Rovers moment when he intercepts and slaloms forward in a 60-yard yard break down the left flank!
At the other end Schmeichel saved an Aguero stab and then Vincent Kompany advanced to a smash a preposterous long-range shot that swerved into the top corner.
A colossal goal by a skipper with a huge personality.
The replays showed that, as he realised the Leicester midfield had backed off, big Vince decided to smash the left side of the ball with the outside of his right boot and hit across the ball so hard that both his feet left the ground and the ball swerved at least two yards in flight and was still swerving outwards as it hit the back of the net.
His nearest teammates had been shouting, “Don’t shoot!”
That spectacular strike is Man Citeh’s 100th goal of this season and it gave them their 13th straight win and puts them top by one point after 37 games.
On Sunday : Liverpool v Wolves is on Sky, who will simultaneously screen Brighton v Manchester City from the Amex.
