Liverpool sell Torres for £50m, buy Andy Carroll for £35m

Fernando Torres and David Luiz are Chelsea players.

Liverpool  have confirmed that Torres has signed for Chelsea.

Torres will be  27 next month and wants to win the Champions League.  I’ve had the hump about this transfer for three days now. I love Torres but I’m just not happy about him leaving Liverpool in mid-season.

But I will have to swallow it, have to accept it

Andy Carrroll, 21,  will partner Luis Suarez but not at Stamford Bridge, as he is recovering from a thigh injury

Must admit I’m surprised by the spending blitz.

We knew that Darren Bent didn’t like living in the North East and Aston Villa bought him for £18m going up to £24m.

Houllier added Bent’s pace to the pace of Agbonlahor and Young –  and Bent might prosper and find true happiness. Until his next move. Whispers from Sunderland suggested  DB is quite “high-maintenance”.

I thought that Bent would be the only big deal of this window. Knowing that Arsenal would not sign anybody, I didn’t pay much attention to the transfer window until a friend phoned tonight  and said that Torres was in a helicopter on his way to London, and Carroll had left Newcastle in a helicopter, headed for Melwood, the Liverpool training ground.

I like Andy Carroll a lot and think he’s a very promising   £15m centre forward. But if I owned Newcastle, I would  NOT sell him for £36m. Not now, not on January 31st, not in a million years.

Where is Mike Ashley hiding tonight? Alan Pardew would like to know. I know where  Ashley might be.

The circus goes on and Chelsea play Liverpool on Sunday.

That game will not be presented by Richard Keys and Andy Gray, who were sacked last week.  Their sacking  was a  gigantic media story that  took up far too much of our attention, although I only read the headlines. There’s a big power struggle going on at Sky and it so happens I’ve met one of the players, Andy Melvin, at a West Ham-Arsenal game  years ago. He’s a tough Scot and I liked him.

Only three EPL clubs didn’t spend : West Brom,  Everton and Arsenal.

Wenger has signed  one Japanese teenager.
