Maguire, Stones & Pickford can do the business against Croatia

What’s the mood of England fans today?

Very upbeat.

PeopleĀ think we will beat Croatia and reach the World Cup Final.

Yes, Croatia have fluent teamwork and they can improvise dangerous moments. But they’re tired. We’ve been told that by their coach, so it must be true.

By comparison,EnglandĀ  are younger, fitter and more confident.

We’re on a roll with new heroes like Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire, John Stones and Kieran Trippier.

Unlike Peter Shilton and Joe Hart, Pickford is good with his feet and has already saved a penalty in a shoot-out against Colombia.

The great Neville Southall, who won 92 caps for Wales and two titles with Everton in 1985 and 1987, thinks Pickford is a top keeper. That endorsement is good enough for me.

Extra time tonight?

We might not need another half an hour. Maybe a couple of big headers will do. Another unstoppable header by Harry Maguire.

Myself, I reckon John Stones is due another header. And Dele Alli is always an aerial threat.

If tonight’s game in Moscow goes as many expect, I could burst into song sooner rather than later. All together now, “It’s coming home, it’s coming home, headball’s coming home!”

PS. We have mental strength now. Belief. Not fear of failure.

We’ve cast off our failures and inhibitions.

That’s because Gareth Southgate hired psychologist Dr Pippa Grainge.

Pippa Grange in Melbourne, Australia, in 2010.
