More late goals as Pochettino’s heroes navigate a tricky contest

Tottenham Hotspur 3 Dortmund 0

Son 47 Vertonghen 83 Llorente 86

Big games need big players.

Jan Vertonghen and Heung-min Son come into that category.

Dortmund had looked good in a first half where jinking Jadon Sancho was the best player in the pitch.

But Spurs contained them and it was 0-0 at half-time.

Mauricio Pochettino is a very astute navigator who sails boldly to explore new territories and inspires his loyal crew.

The first half wasn’t great last night but Spurs worked through that and took control in the second.

Jan Vertonghen pushed forward to provide a beautifully measured cross that allowed Son to volley home from six yards.

Lucas Moura started to run towards the South Korean but then ran the other way to congratulate the Belgian and found the Dane had got there before him. Eriksen knew what a fantastic cross that was well before it reached its target.

When Sissoko crossed from the right, Vertonghen ghosted in to volley home from five yards to make it 2-0.

Then Eriksen fired an inswinging corner from the left and  sub Fernando Llorente headed in from two yards.

Last night Poch said, “My players are heroes. The effort that they are doing is amazing.”

Vertonghen said, “It was a great cross by Siss.”

Pochettino has put Spurs where Arsenal want to be: on the biggest stage, competing with the best teams in the world and earning big TV money.

Champions League records will state that on Tuesday night Manchester United lost 2-0 at Old Trafford to PSG and on Wednesday night Spurs beat Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley.
