It will be a fascinating game tonight.
The Europa League Final in Stockholm.
A fearless young Ajax team who play very slick modern football.
Kasper Dolberg, the blond Dane, went to Ajax on trial and the club didn’t take long to make up their minds. After one day of the trial, Director of Football Marc Overmars told his agent Jens Steffensen, “We want to sign him.”
The lad was a left winger in the Danish League but Overmars thought the big teenager could play centre forward and got Dennis Bergkamp to work with him.
In a piece in The Guardian, Ed Aarons says that Dolberg was discovered by Ajax’s Scandinavian scout John Steen Olsen, who also discovered Jan Molby, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Eriksen.
On what I’ve seen so far, the 19-year-old Dolberg has a helluva lot of potential. Four years from now he could be a half Van Basten, half Bergkamp. The kid’s only become famous recently but he’s been on the radar of a big clubs for a couple of years already
As the great Matt Busby used to say, if they’re good enough, they’re old enough.
Historically, Ajax are very good at developing young footballers and this talented team has proved that yet again.
Davy Klaassen, 24, is a big blond midfielder, very composed and mature. He scored his first goal for Holland against Spain in 2015 and Spain’s goalkeeper that day was David De Gea.
Manchester United? A team in transition.
Winning the Europa League would accelerate that transition, I think
But they’ll miss the injured Zlatan, as any team would.
However, the stage is also set for Marcus Rashford, the prodigy from Wythenshawe, to do the business.
He scores exciting goals and can also play killer passes, so Rashford could be Michael Owen with assists.
My gut feeling is that Ajax v Man Utd will be a really good game of football.
Even though it will be surrounded one of the biggest and strictest security operations Stockholm has ever seen, following this week’s terrorist atrocity at the Manchester Arena.
